Inserting the missing character is filling-up of the empty (missing) spaces in letter and number puzzles given in pictorial forms.
In this chapter, numbers or letters or both are represented through one or more figures (geometrical or any other figure). Such numbers or letters are arranged inside the figure according to a certain pattern (i.e., based on particular logic and/or mathematical calculations) but in such arrangement one character is missing, which is denoted by question mark (?). The candidate is required to find out the character that can replace the question mark (?) satisfying the logic and calculations.
Some of the important orders followed in these questions are as follow
• In each number something may be added or deducted to get the next number and so on.
• The numbers may be divided to get the next number.
• The square root of the numbers may be taken to get the missing number.
• The numbers may be squared to get the missing number.
• Sometimes something is added, subtracted, multiplied of divided to get the missing number.
• Sometimes odd numbers are followed or proceded by even numbers and vice-versa.
Various puzzles based on inserting the missing character that are asked in various competitive exams are classified into following types
Number Puzzles
In such type of problems, some numbers are arranged in a certain pattern, which can follow the rule of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squaring or cubing of consecutive numbers etc. Based on these different operations we have to find the missing character in the given problems.

Letter Puzzles
In this type of problems, the arrangement of the letters of the English alphabet is done according to a certain pattern that may involve addition/sub traction of the positional values of letters, operations on the positional values of the letters from the end of English alphabet etc. The candidate is required to find out the rule and the missing character from the arrangement based on that rule.
