Venn diagram deals with questions, which aim at analyzing a candidate’s ability to relate a certain given group of items/things. A venn diagram shows all the possible relations between the given groups of elements in a single figure.
Venn diagram depicts the process of representing the things/objects/persons/departments/organizations/events etc., through diagrammatic medium by the use of figures such as square, circle, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezium, triangle etc. The representation of various similarity and dissimilarity of the object through the diagram provides a better insight to the candidate regarding the role and area of representation of various object.
Basically two types of questions are asked from this chapter.
1. Identification of Relation based Venn Diagram
2. Analysis based Venn Diagram
1. Identification of Relation based Venn Diagram
Here, some standard representations for groups of three items with different cases of venn diagrams are given
Case 1
In the above diagram, first item is related to the second item and second item is related to the third item.
e.g., Red Fort, Delhi, India
Red Fort is a monument built by Mughals is located in Delhi. Delhi is the capital of India.
Red Fort(A) -> Delhi(B) -> India(C)
Here, first item Red Fort is contained in second item, i.e., Delhi and the second item Delhi, is contained in third item, i.e., India.
Some other examples are
• Day, Week, Year
• Tehsil, District, State
• Second, Minute, Hour
Case 2
In the above diagram, A and B have something in common as they intersect each other and C is independent from others as it doesn’t share any area with them.
e.g., A -> Police, B -> Honest person and C -> Elephant Some of the policemen may be honest and some of the honest persons may be policemen but both of them cannot be an elephant.
Some other example is
Teachers, Post graduates, Clock
Case 3
In the above diagram, two separate items are contained in a third item.
e.g., A -> Table, B -> Chair, C -> Furniture
Clearly, table and chair are separate items but both are furniture.
Some other examples are
• Tea, Coffee, Beverages
• Bus, Car, Vehicle
In this type, all are partly related to each other.

Some children may be students but birds are entirely different.
Example Which of the following answer figures indicates best relation between Aeroplanes, Train, Travel? ssc (1 o+ 2) 2012
2. Analysis based Venn Diagram
In this type, generally a venn diagram comprising of different geometrical figures is given. Each geometrical figure in the diagram represents a certain class. The candidate is required to study and analysis the figure carefully and then answer the given question based on it.
Example How many backward uneducated people are employed according to the figure given below? ssc (10+2) 2012
(a)14
(b)5
(c)7
(d)11
Answer:
(b) Both circles common number is represented by backward uneducated and employed people. Hence, such peoples are 5.
